Woman Who Drowned Her Three Children, Gives Birth To Her Fourth Baby

A Long Island mom who admitted to drowning her three children has given birth to a fourth while incarcerated.

NBC New York reports that Leatrice Brewer, 33, was impregnated at the Mid-Hudson Forensic Psychiatric Center in New Hampton where she's been locked up since admitting to drowning her three kids in a bathtub in 2008.
The center refused to comment, citing privacy laws, and it remains unclear who the father of Brewer's child is or how she was able to get pregnant at the secure facility, according to NBC New York.
Attorney Tom Foley, who represents the father of two of Brewer's deceased children, called her pregnancy "outrageous".

"This person's supposedly in a secure facility and she gets pregnant," Foley said. "This is the woman who had no idea what she was doing when she murdered her children."
The Associated Press reported last week that Brewer, who was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect, is also seeking a cut of $350,000 won by the fathers of her children in wrongful death lawsuits.

Psychiatrists who evaluated Brewer said she had a major depressive disorder and likely killed her children because she wanted to save them from the deadly effects of voodoo, according to the AP.
Shortly after she killed her children, Brewer attempted suicide, first by swallowing a combination of cleaning products and then by jumping out of a two-story window.

Scientists Discover The Most Awesome Cure For Hangovers

Most of us are familiar with the pounding headaches, drowsiness, stomach-turning nausea and "did-I-get-run-over-by-a-bus" sensation that comes with that most dreaded of morning-after ailments: the hangover.

To alleviate the suffering, chugging coffee, downing Advil or simply choosing to forego the wretched day altogether by returning to bed sometimes does the trick. But what if there were a miracle elixir that could chase that hangover cloud away -- and better still, what if that magic drink were something you could easily pick up at your local supermarket?
A group of Chinese researchers say that they may have indeed found this perfect hangover cure -- and it goes by the name of "Sprite."


After examining 57 beverages in a lab, researcher Hua-Bin Li and his colleagues at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou determined that Sprite was one of the drinks that best relieved hangover symptoms.

The team of scientists had hypothesized that what you consume after drinking booze could alter the effect of alcohol on your body. Specifically, they theorized that certain drinks could impact the body's metabolism of alcohol in a way that would help alleviate hangover symptoms.

Chemistry World explains it this way:

Some of the adverse effects of alcohol are thought to be caused, not by the ethanol itself, but by ethanol’s first metabolite, acetaldehyde. Ethanol is metabolized into acetaldehyde by the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and then into acetate by aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Unlike acetaldehyde, acetate is innocuous and may even be responsible for some of the positive health benefits of alcohol consumption. Therefore the key to reducing alcohol-related damage lies in minimizing the amount of time acetaldehyde is present in the body.

The Chinese researchers, therefore, decided that they would look at how the different beverages impacted the activity of ADH and ALDH.
Some beverages were found to be terrible for a hangover. An herbal infusion with hemp seeds, for example, was discovered to boost the activity of ADH while inhibiting ALDH, therefore slowing down the breakdown of acetaldehyde and dragging out the hangover effects.
On the other hand, some drinks, including Sprite (known in China as Xue bi) and a type of soda water, were found to have the opposite effect: increasing the activity of ALDH and thus speeding up the breakdown of acetaldehyde.
The researchers are reportedly planning to conduct the tests in living organisms, but the results have already generated a lot of buzz, as people around the world celebrate the possible death of the hangover. However, experts warn that we shouldn't quite raise the victory flag just yet.
Edzard Ernst, a medicinal science expert from the University of Exeter, told Chemistry World that while he found the study interesting, more research is necessary before we wholeheartedly embrace the results.

Joseph The Dog Was Chained To A Tree For 4 Years

Joseph the German Shepherd was clinging to life when authorities rescued him. He was emaciated and dehydrated, his skin was covered with infection, and he had heart worms. Police say his owner left him chained to a tree for four straight years.

The poor pooch -- whose name was changed from Toby by the folks at Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) in Ohio -- is getting better. He's currently undergoing veterinary rehabilitation.
Joseph's former owner, Jeremy Shane Temple, faces animal cruelty charges.
"It's just hard, really, seeing a dog that skinny," Kassie Jadin, the facilities manager at PAWS, told HuffPost Crime. "It's just so pathetic all around. There aren't enough words to explain how sad it is."


Officers told WCPO that they found the 5-to-7-year-old dog chained to a backyard tree in Middletown with no more than a few scraps of food and little water. Jadin says he was covered in fleas and painful bites.
Temple reportedly told suspicious neighbors that Joseph had a disease that made him appear to be emaciated. When an arresting officer asked Temple about Joseph's condition, he allegedly said, "The dog is not a human."
Temple was fined and released, but he's expected back in court on Oct. 14 for more hearings on animal abuse charges. City prosecutors didn't return calls for comment by press time.

Killer hornets: Death toll rises to 42 and 1,600 are injured

Crews have been spraying nests with chemicals and setting them ablaze in a mass cull following a wave of attacks

Firefighters in China have begun a mass cull of killer hornet nests after the deadly insects claimed the lives of at least 42 people in a wave of attacks.
Wearing protective suits to escape the 6mm stings, firefighters have been spraying them with chemicals and setting nests ablaze.
Hospitals in the city of Ankang have been forced to set up specialist units to cope with the influx of people suffering from multiple stings.
Victims have revealed puncture wounds measuring several milimetres apart after being attacked.
A mother and son were among those to die at the hands of one swarm, and hundreds more villagers have been treated in hospitals in rural areas for injuries.
Most of the victims have come under attack while working outdoors in rice fields, but a 68-year-old was killed after wind blew a hornets nest over, prompting a furious attack.
Chinese authorities said today the death toll has reached 42 and that at least 1,600 have been treated for injuries.
More than 230 people have been stung in the city of Ankang alone, which is the hardest hit with 19 of the total deaths in the past three months.

The number of dead is expected to rise as scores more people are lying critically ill in hospital.
The spate of attacks has prompted the city’s hospital to set up a panel specialising in the treatment of hornet stings.
People in the cities of Hanzhong and Shangluo have also been killed and injured.
Ankang’s fire department has removed over 300 hornet nests from crowded residential areas since July in an attempt to address the problem.
Experts believe the culprits to be the Asian giant hornet, which grows up to 5cm long with a 6mm sting.
The giant hornets’ highly toxic stings can lead to anaphylactic shock and renal failure.
The attacks are an annual problem but have worsened this year, possibly due to warmer weather boosting breeding.
Between 2002 and 2005 there were 36 deaths and 715 people injured, according to Ankang police.
Earlier this month, it was revealed a deadly breed of hornet was threatening Britain’s bees.

Boy finds mummy with arrow in eye in granny's attic

GERMAN police, prosecutors and forensics experts are facing a mystery after a 10-year-old boy found a human mummy in a sarcophagus in a corner of his grandparents' attic.
A CT scan has revealed a well-preserved human skull, with an arrow sticking out of the left eye socket, and large parts of a skeleton with the arms crossed over the chest, the local newspaper Kreiszeitung has reported.

Adding to the riddle is a death mask also found in the box, and the fact that X-rays show a metal layer covering the bones of the 1.49-metre-long human remains of unknown gender.
The boy's father, Lutz-Wolfgang Kettler, said his own father, who died 12 years ago, had in the 1950s travelled to North Africa and may have brought back the mummy as a grisly souvenir.

But here's where it gets strange.
The bandages used for the mummy -- which has not been unwrapped for fear of damaging the remains -- date from the 20th century and are machine-woven, said Kettler, a dentist who attended the CT scan.

Pathologist Andreas Nerlich of Munich's Bogenhausen hospital told news website Spiegel Online that, while the skull and the bones are real, the mummy is "a fake, made from one or several human bodies."
"What we have are questions upon questions" since the boy, Alexander, found the mummy about a month ago, said Kettler.
Police and prosecutors have taken note of the case in the town of Diepholz, Lower Saxony state, and are waiting for more information on where the body came from before looking into the possibility of modern-age foul play.
"We'll wait until we know how old the bones are," police spokesman Frank Bavendiek told German news agency DPA. "If they are a few hundred years old, then it's a mummy and we won't investigate."

Xiao Feng, 2-Year-Old, Gives 'Birth' To Own Twin In China

A 2-year-old in China is reported to have "given birth" to the undeveloped fetus of his twin.
Xiao Feng, of Huaxi, was taken to the hospital after his parents noticed he had a bloated stomach and was having trouble breathing, Fox News reported Monday.

Doctors found that Feng was carrying an undeveloped fetus inside his stomach, and removed it through emergency surgery, according to Inquisitr's translation of newscast from a China Central Television, a state-run media outlet.
The fetus, doctors say, was Feng's twin. Identical twins occur when a fertilized egg splits in two. Conjoined twins occur when a fertilized egg begins to split, but fails to do so completely. In Feng's case, the fetus was his conjoined twin that had been absorbed into his body inside the womb.
Doctors surgically removed the fetus, noting that Feng would have died if the parasitic twin hadn't been removed.

The dead fetus was about 10 inches wide and had a fully-formed spine and limbs.
Is this case too bizarre to be believed? Maybe, but the same thing happened last year in Peru, when a three-year-old boy was found to be carrying his parasitic twin brother inside of him, according to CBS News.
In 2008, there was a similar case involving 9-year-old in Greece. The girl was diagnosed with a tumor that turned out to be concealing the undeveloped embryo of her parasitic twin, Medical News Today reported.
